Thomas Edison had only 3 months of formal schooling. This informally educated man had about 1,093 inventions in America. This is a daunting task for most men.
Henry Ford had less than 10 years of formal education and was he able to invent automation in the automobile industry and was the first pay a hourly salary to his employees; and to become the most innovative car maker in the world for long time.
Bill Gates the richest man in the world dropped out from college to help create the first PC with Windows and the most dominant software computer company in the world;
The Apple and Iphone man, Stove Jobs, decided that his teachers from college had no vision for the future, so he quit to change the world and he did it in a very high scale.
Michael Faraday was a genuine experimental genius with no formal education and is considered one of the most influential scientists of all time.
Srinivasa Ramanujan, an Indian self-taught man. He was insanely good at math, and it wasn't due to any education, either -- he was entirely self taught.(Small note out of context- By the way, the Indians were the ones who discovered ZERO - 0 without which no computer programming in many cases) Today, they compare his skills to Isaac Newton and many other famous scientists. His formulas or theories have found uses in everything from string theory to crystallography. Madam C.J. Walker had endured a difficult childhood, and being female, African American, with virtually no formal education to become the person she had become was not an easy task. She is considered a revolutionary in the area of personal hygiene and grooming for the nation's black women, having begun an initiative to educate and give them tools to stay healthy and look their best, in particular, via her creation of the Walker Hair Care System. She died as a millionaire. That will be unfair not to mention Leonardo da Vinci who was a homosexual and very timid individual, but thanks to his deep curiosity without a formal education he became an apprentice. From an apprentice to become painter, sculptor, architect, musician, mathematician, engineer, inventor, anatomist, geologist, cartographer, botanist, and writer. As a famous painter and scientist he was commissioned by Sforza, a ruling family of Renaissance Italy, to pain The Last Super, a picture that Christians love.
This is very important.
Well, there are a great number of men, most of them are unknown, who have achieved greatness without a formal education. By the way, most of formal educations from universities came from men with no formal education because our world had many thousands of years if not millions without universities. The reason why self-teaching is very important because you will not be subject to learn a profession based on a political or religious or a group of people's agenda. And everyone has access. I believe there must be some type of regulations, but not guided by any agenda. Imagine if everyone can learn independently any profession and he or she has to do is to pass a test or tests (theory and hands on practice) to prove they have learned so they can practice the profession. Imagine how many professionals and problem solvers the world would have! Does it make sense? I dream of a world where anyone is free to learn independently and will be provided the tools needed to practice without any prejudice or discrimination.
Our system of education is broken and not so good. Why everyone has to learn the same way and for the same amount of time? Neuroscience says that people are wired differently, so they must learn differently. Time is very relative to value, effectiveness, and speed. Jean Decety from The University of Chicago discovered that imagination is equal to readiness. He demonstrated that if someone takes a pen and imagines he or she is going to write a word or sentence very fast or very slow, so the time spent to write is very proportional to time taken to think or imagine about what is written. In other words, my personal opinion, when you tell a student this program or that curriculum is for 4 or 5 years of study. By having to put a date on a program or curriculum is somewhat unfair because the time frame or the schedule affect our imagination by making us, low or fast, by becoming conformed to the set of schedules or the amount of time proposed to study something. There is a test called TOEFL. This test made for foreigners coming to America to learn. Guess what! There is no time frame to study to pass the test. Anyone who studies can take this test to pass or fail. It is up to you. Imagine if they saying that you have to study in America in certain institutions for a period of 4 to 5 years to master the American language in order to go to college in America. Guess how many talents and inventors who would have lost?The internet has grown faster than any other invention and has become a worldwide phenomenon because everyone is free to create a website or an app or software, and to share it with the whole world by giving other people access to learn and to buy new ideas and inventions. No matter what level of education you have you can learn almost any thing you want online and use it to create a business or for your personal use. Many of the internet developers have no formal software education. In fact, they created the software they needed before the universities did and they continue innovating by creating new software and apps that have no frontiers and by breaking the walls that many formal educators put on us without any good reasons. Wikipedia is a great examples of free learning and sharing that boosts education independently of formal education. Now you or your kids or a loved one can start today on the path of self-teaching for free 24/7 anywhere in the world. Howard Gardner who is, perhaps, the most current reputable educator in the world, says:"with all the technology and information available, you can learn and have a Ph.D most faster than in the past. Let's tell the whole world about it. Imagine a world where everyone is skilled and educated! Click to start now for free Free High Level Education to anyone
